The Publicity Secretary of Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) who also doubles as the deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Lahai Lawrence Leema has revealed why a former Minister, Paolo Conteh has been been arrested and remanded in custody since Friday.

Leema spoke this morning, Monday 31st Decemeber 2018 during a live Radio Programme at Radio Democracy 98.1FM.

According to Leema, the detention of Paolo Conteh at the CID is for security reasons. He further stated that the government will ensure his release upon satisfaction with the security in the state.

Recall that Alfred Paolo Conteh, the defence minister under ex-President Ernest Koroma, and Sannah Marrah, his deputy at the ministry, were arrested on Friday in connection with several alleged military procurement irregularities, said the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) head Francis Kaifala.

“After the discussions, we decided to detain them both

“We are building up our case now and will have to charge them within 10 days in order to keep them in custody.”, Kaifala told reporters.

The detention attracted over one hundred supporters of Sierra Leone’s main opposition party, All People’s Congress (APC) including its flagbearer in the 2018 general elections, Dr. Samura Kamara who stormed the police headquarters in Freetown on Saturday to protest the arrest and detention of the former minister.

The former Presidential aspirant while addressing the APC supporters during the protest told them to resist the Anti-Corruption politricks of the SLPP describing it as a ‘with hunt’ and calcualted attempt to silent its party members.
