Sierraloaded revealed days ago, about the Whooping billions of leones that was being spent on some of our political governors, Alpha Kanu.
The revelation was made when the 2016 Appropriation Act was being debated by Members of Parliament on Monday November 23rd 2015.
When the Committee of Supply started calling Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDA’S) to defend their 2015 budgets,Sub Appropriation Committee 3 headed by Hon Benneh Bangura expressed displeasure over the Ministry of Information and Communication that appeared before the committee to defend its 2015 budget.
The Committee picked out that a whooping amount of 3,105, 24130 Billion Leones was spent on the Minister of Information and Communication, Hon Alpha Kanu alone.
In a swift reaction to the development, Alpha Kanu said that “it is normal for government to pay for professional career development”, the reason he benefited from the Harvard Kennedy University Course.
He said he saw nothing wrong in such as the practice has been going since time immemorial and even during the Sierra Leone Peoples Party government.
The Minister said he was never questioned by Parliament on anything concerning the Harvard Kennedy University Course and that he is not the first Sierra Leonean to be sponsored by government for career development.
The discovery was made by the Parliamentary Appropriation Sub – Committee III during their questioning of Ministry officials who produced documents that indicated that such money was spent on the Minister’s Harvard Kennedy University in London.
During the SLPP days, Alpha Timbo, the then Minister of Labor and Social Security pursued a Law Degree in the University of Sierra Leone, thereby sparking a lot of debate among the Sierra Leonean society at that time, with some calling for his resignation.
The views of senior citizens were sounded during that period with one of them being the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists, Ibrahim Ben Kargbo who advanced the argument that he saw no reason why somebody should be prevented from further studies.
Minister Kanu’s Course discovery came to the fore during the Parliamentary Hearings on the utilization of Budget Allocation for the 2014/2015 Fiscal year.
