Isatu Kargbo, a confirmed traditional FGM-Practitioner, also known as Sowei, who hailed from Northern Sierra Leone, may be sentenced to death by hanging if found guilty for the murder of her husband as the laws of Sierra Leone demands.
She was remanded at the Female Correctional Centre in Freetown last week when she appeared before the Chief Justice, Abdulai Hamid Charm, accused of the alleged murder of her late husband, Alpha Kamara. Madam Kargbo is charge with the offense of murder contrary to the laws of Sierra Leone.
She was preliminarily investigation at the Waterloo Magistrate Court, where sufficient evidence was adduced against her, warranting the committal of her matter to the High Court for proper trial.
The State prosecution, led by Director of Public Prosecution, Lawyer Suliaman A. Bah alleged that the accused in February 2015 at the Western Rural District headquarters town of Waterloo, murdered Alpha Kamara with a sharp knife.
When asked if the allegation that he murdered the deceased, she denied, “I am not guilty my Lord. I love my husband and I had no intention to kill him. It was a little misunderstanding and the work of the Devil that resulted in his death,” she explained.
Apart from denying to committing the offence, she added that she had a disagreement with the deceased bordering on infidelity which apparently resulted in the death of the man.
She was however represented by Lawyer Ishmael Philip Mammie assisted by Cecilia Tucker Esq. and O. C. Spencer Coker Esq.
Meanwhile, she was refused bail and remanded. Her matter was referred to the 4th October 2016. [By Arthur Ben Tucker]
