The Chairman of the Sierra Leone Teachers’ Union (SLTU) Kenema District, Abdul Karim Vangahun alias J.J. has accused the Minister of Education, Science and Technology (MEST), Dr. Minkailu Bah of unfairness to teachers in Kenema district.
He made this statement while speaking to the press in Kenema. He said recruitment of teachers in Kenema district has been put on hold, a situation he described as “unfortunate”. He argued that not all results of teachers are fake in Kenema district as alleged by the Minister. He said the last recruitment exercise in Kenema district was done in 2012 and most teachers were left out.
The SLTU chairman revealed that most schools in the district will not be able to conduct their end of year exams or prepare report cards as they have not received their school fee subsidies since last year. He said to his knowledge no school has received school fee subsidy in the district.
Abdul Karim Vangahun further revealed that a lot of teachers in the district are not been reassessed and those that have been reassessed were not based on experience.
He said teachers are becoming more frustrated in the district due to delays in the payment of their salaries and the negative attitude of the Minister towards their welfare in the district.
