Magistrate Mohamed Salieu Seray-Wurie of the Siaka Steven Street Court # 6, has on Tuesday November 24, 2015 convicted and sentenced one Abraham Abdulai Turay to 28 months in Prison after he was found guilty for stealing one Hill 5.0 KVA generator value five million Leones property of the Center for Accountability and the Rule of Law (CARL).

The convicted accused was charged with the offence of larceny.

According to the Police prosecution ASP Mohamed Fofana, the convicted accused on Wednesday 4th November 2015 at Upper Brooks street in Freetown criminally entered into the office of CARL and stole the said generator.

“In an attempt to load the generator inside a Taxi one Eric Johnson saw him and shouted thief and the accused took to his heels but was chased and apprehended”, said ASP Fofana.

He added that during the comotion the Taxi Driver left with his vehicle abruptly.
However, he said, Police were alerted and the accused who has been convicted was arrested and taken to CID headquarters on Pademba road.

In his ruling Magistrate Seray-Wurie said “I have considered very seriously the statement and particulars of offence, the testimonies of the prosecution witnesses including the statement of the convicted accused to the police. And I have also considered the exhibit tendered in court and on the entirety of the evidence adduced so far, I am satisfied that the prosecution has proven the case against the accused beyond resonable doubt and is found guilty of the charge”

After the ruling was read by the Magistrate, the convicted accused in his plea of mitigation begged the Magistrate for mercy and further assured the court that he will not commit the said crime again.

In passing his sentence on the accused, Magistrate Seray-Wurie stated that “What the convicted accused did was very deliberate”.

“The conduct of the convicted accused in broad day light shows that his plan to steal the generator was willfully calculated and deliberate. Therefore, he is to serve a term of 28 months in prison” the Magistrate ruled.

Magistrate Seray-Wurie also ordered the prosecution to return the generator to the Center for Accountability and the Rule of Law (CARL).

Meanwhile, Abraham Abdulai Turay (the convicted accused) was taken into detention at the Pademba Road Prison where he is expected to spend the next 28 months.
