The former UNIDO boss, Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella yesterday became a full-fledged member of the opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party SLPP when he was issued with a Distinguish Grand Chief Patron membership card of the party at the party’s headquarters in Freetown.
Presenting the membership card to Dr. Yumkella, the National Chairman and Leader of the SLPP, Chief Somanoh Kapen described the occasion as momentous and symbolic , noting that those who thought Grand Chief Patron status was closed have been proved wrong.
Receiving his membership card from Chief Somanoh Kapen, Dr. Kandeh Yumkella said that he and his family have always been ardent SLPP members.
Dr Yumkella said that on his arrival on the 24th of August 2015, this was what he wanted to do but he thanked God for not being late as he had now received his Grand Chief Patron card.
“It is very consistent that as you know I have registered in many other places that indeed the people of Kambia have also honoured me with this Distinguish Grand Chief patron status which again the National Secretariat has granted”, he said.
Dr. Yumkella said that the occasion was historic as the Northern Branch of SLPP in America in which he is a member, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the party to be contributing $ 15,000 yearly.
Dr Yumkella assured all SLPP members that peace and unity should always be the course that they should stand for to stand a chance of winning the 2018 election.
Dr. Yumkella called for the party to be seen as a credible opposition which should be ready to challenge the more time ambition of the ruling party as SLPP does not believe in that philosophy. “SLPP believes that constitutionality must prevail, term limit is term limit”, he stressed.
As a sign of gratitude, Dr. Yumkella presented a plasma TV with two months DSTV subscription to the party’s canteen and also a football with SLPP logo (the palm tree) with the slogan ‘Put Salone Fos’
