Supporters and members of the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) on Monday came out from all corners of the Western Area (Rural and Urban) to grace the final rally of the party in the Western Area.
As earlier promised by top echelons of the party, onlookers were appalled when they saw what they described as ‘more than a million supporters’ dancing enthusiastically on all major streets marching towards the National Stadium. Some business houses were smart enough not to open to the public and those who did, had to close as early as 11 am, as it was difficult for even pedestrians to pass through some parts of the central district of Freetown.
Approaching from the East end of Freetown, Brigadier Julius Maada Bio and his wife, Mrs. Fatima Bio drove along Bai Bureh Road to Kissy Road, leading to Goderich Street on to Siaka Stevens street.
Brig. Bio`s Running Mate, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh approached from the West end of Freetown and the swelling crowd behind Dr. Jalloh had already occupied a large section of the National Stadium prior to the arrival of the flag bearer, Brigadier (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio.
Addressing a mammoth crowd at the National Stadium, the President- in-waiting, Rtd. Brigadier Julius Maada Bio together with his astute and dynamic Running mate, Dr. Juldeh Jalloh justified why the ruling All People’s Congress (APC) party deserves to go after plunging the country into an untold hardship and suffering.
Brigadier Bio assured Sierra Leoneans that his administration will provide an effective and efficient leadership which he believes, will serve as a deterrent to APC`s bad governance which has reduced this country to a failed state.
Brig. Bio promised to improve on the health care system which is nothing good to write home about and gave assurance in providing free education from primary to secondary level which he believes can be affordable only if corruption is tackled.
He described the economy as a collapsed one that needs emergency recovery plan.
Throughout the process, no riotous conduct or violence erupted which has shown the people and the international community the peaceful nature of the SLPP.
Songs like “Tolongbo Nor Go Sidon Ya, Angry Boku Oh”, and the just released song “Good Do” by the iconic Emerson Bockarie, formed part of the campaign.
