Alie Kabba, A leading contender for the leadership of the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) has called for a law allowing for Diaspora voting.
Mr. Alie Kabba, who is known to have a major support base in the Diaspora, argued that people should not be disenfranchised just because of their geographical location in this era of technology.
“No matter where you are, you should be able to vote,” he said, noting that Diaspora voting had been done successfully in several countries, including Sierra Leone’s next door neighbor, Guinea.
The call for Diaspora voting is not new. It only recently gained momentum during the course of the ongoing Constitutional review process.
But the National Electoral Commission has argued that it does not have the resources to handle such an undertaking.
